Up & Coming LGBT Music: Tús Nua

by Lauren Wood

Remember a while back when I reviewed this little lesbian band? (Click HERE if you don't!)

Well look here: they have some new music for you!

New song 'Matches' sounds half like something from The Hunger Games soundtrack, and half like something dreamy and otherworldly that Daughter would write.

Check it out here if you're into that sort of vibe:

About the band:

Formed in 2014, Tús Nua has existed with the current members since 2016. The band released an EP in April of 2014 and is currently recording its first LP, which should be out by the end of 2016. First single off the album, called Matches, will be released in July 2016. Tús Nua plays a blend of post-rock, shoegaze, and a little bit of everything, and is currently based in Zagreb. So far, Tús Nua has played in Belgium, Slovenia, and Croatia.

SUSAN SURFTONE Releases BRAND NEW SINGLE

SUSAN SURFTONE RELEASES BRAND NEW SINGLE
“BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY”. THE SONG MARKS THE VETERAN GUITARIST’S OFFICIAL SINGING DEBUT AND FIRST SINGLE OFF OF HER UPCOMING EP “THE MAGICIAN"

PORTLAND, OR - Former FBI agent turned singer/songwriter, Susan Surftone is back with her first digital dose of riptide-ready rock and roll for 2016.

One of the premiere female surf guitarists of our time,  Surftone has released her brand new single called “Blue Moon of Kentucky”:http://cdbaby.com/cd/susansurftone9

"I chose to cover "Blue Moon of Kentucky" because it was the second song Elvis Presley ever recorded. On this song he's not a polished vocalist and neither am I. He's singing in a higher key because he's young, only 19, and that higher key is easier for me, “ says Susan Surftone. "I’ve been singing to Elvis all my life in private and I thought maybe it's time to do it in public. The song itself is a bluegrass song written by Bill Monroe. It gives me an opportunity to play a different lead guitar style than my usual style. I just really like the song.”

“Blue Moon of Kentucky” is Surftone’s first single off of her upcoming EP dubbed “The Magician”, due out on July 5, 2016.         The Magician is a little bit of departure from her old style as it sees Surftone - after recording four instrumental albums- stepping out of her instrumental-rock comfort zone to step in front of the mic and make her debut vocal performance on 3/3 of the songs - including the track “Little Bit Lied To”, which she personally penned.

Surftone is no stranger to breaking grounds.
The New York native had, early on already defied convention by learning how to write and perform electric guitar music instead of contenting herself with listening and dancing along (like most other girls) to the day’s big boy bands.

To say that Surftone plays a mean guitar is to put it mildly. Now more than merely a great female guitarist, Susan has established herself as a terrific player.

Yet the road to success was not an easy one and she certainly paid her dues.
After she graduated from law school at Boston University, the Federal Bureau of Investigation approached her about becoming an agent. She took the job with the F.B.I. at the height of the Cold War before plugging in her guitar permanently.

Since then the Portland, Oregon resident has led her own stellar group, The SurfTones, through many many album releases—at least thirteen—as Susan and The SurfTones. From Without A Word (1995), Thunderbeach (1996) and This Ain’t No Beach Party (1999) and onto later classics like 2007’s There She Goes Again—Susan and The SurfTones Play The VU (Velvet Underground), Susan has stayed the course of her sound,.

Through the years she has always been a strong advocate of encouraging girls to play guitar and start bands, and while she may be a rarity in the genre of surf rock, she certainly now has a prolific discography recorded with her previous bands not to mention her solo albums.

NEW Music Video from ANTIGONE RISING

ANTIGONE RISING
RELEASES BRAND NEW MUSIC VIDEO FOR “EVERYWHERE IS HOME”
FROM THE SOUNDTRACK OF THE LESBIAN MOB COMEDY ALTO

New York, NY - Antigone Rising (AR) has announced the release of the brand new music video for their song “Everywhere is Home” from the popular lesbian mob comedy feature film “Alto”.

The music video dropped March 9 on the band’s YouTube channel at: https://youtu.be/9Q6ccJvmgA0

Alto is a quirky love story set in the midst of an unanticipated run-in with the NY mafia.
It stars Diana DeGarmo, Natalie Knepp, David Valcin, Lou Martini, Jr., Melanie Minichino, and AR’s own Nini Camps.

Alto’s film producer Toni D'Antonio had produced the music video for the band’s massive hit “That Was The Whiskey”, and film director Mikki del Monico directed it.

As for the little behind-the-scenes story of the video: in the film, Diana DeGarmo sings lead with Nini Camps (who co-wrote the song with Daniel Tashian and plays best friend Kat) on background vocals.  This past month (February 2016), Antigone Rising took to the stage to sing their song, this time with Nini Camps where you can usually find her: on lead vocals. The music video uses both!

Antigone Rising continues to rise to the occasion fusing their success in the music industry with educating youth around the globe as Cultural Ambassadors to the United States Government.

The band has successfully launched their own noprofit organization, Girl Bands Rock (www.GirlBandsRock.org) - to inspire and educate kids, especially young girls, that it's ok to think outside the box and pursue careers in non-traditional fields. They have partnered with school districts and youth centers all over the country to create innovative programming dedicated to building confidence in youth by developing leadership and creative skills through musical workshops, outreach programs and performances.

For the all-female-boot-stompin'-alt-country-rock band ANTIGONE RISING, helping aspiring young artists while giving back to their community is something that comes second nature to a group that is helping to create music and history.

Best known for relentless touring and masterful musicianship, Antigone Rising played upwards of 280 shows a year in their early days. Whether it was an open mic on a Monday night or a jam packed New York City hometown show, the ladies and their infamous Vanna White (the band's beloved 15 passenger van) eventually blazed a trail straight to arenas alongside some of the biggest names in rock history including The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, The Allman Brothers Band, The Bangles and Rob Thomas.

HEATHER PEACE To Headline L FEST 2016!

Heather Peace will headline the festival closing the music stage on Sunday 17th July 2016. Heather is the first of many announcements that L Fest have up their sleeve for 2016.

L Fest, The UK's only lesbian festival have announced their headliner for 2016. After teasing us all with their much anticipated February 29th Leap Year release date we can now confirm that one of the most iconic lesbian music stars will be headliner at their event - introducing Heather Peace!

Heather released her debut album, Fairytales, in 2012 and The Thin line in June 2014.  As well as headlining at L Fest she is releasing her new EP 'Come Home', a European and a full band UK Tour are also planned 2016. She is well known for her work as an actress for 20 years, starring in TV shows like London’s Burning, Ultimate Force, Lip Service and Prey, Heather left her leading role in BBC One drama Waterloo Road in 2014, to fully commit to her flourishing music career.
Over the last three years, Heather has performed four sell out UK tours with her full band as well as four sell-out solo acoustic tours. She’s headlined London Pride, performed with her idol Alison Moyet and played shows with KT Tunstall, Rebecca Ferguson, Deacon Blue and Brian May. Internationally, she’s twice sold out tours across Australia as well as headlining the world famous Sydney Mardi Gras Fair Day.

We spoke to the festival director Cindy Edwards and asked her about the line up for this year: "We were delighted to secure Heather Peace for 2016, she's a name that keeps coming up in our feedback surveys so we are very excited to get her on board this year. Heather is the start of our roll out campaign for artists this year. We have many more big announcements to come over the next few months and 2016 ticket sales are already proving that this is going to be an exciting year!"

New LGBTQ Music: Kerchief

(Brooklyn, NY) While Kerchief's LP Machines and Animals bears no title track, the sophomore single "Jack London" lends a fitting summary of the entire 11-song debut.

Formerly of the indie band Vanity Theft, Britt Hill cuts through with the poetically relatable and compelling edge that has grabbed the attention of critics and fans alike since the album's mid-summer release.

A dynamic composition tensely contained by its recurrent low-end hypnosis with a cumulating burst from a boundless wall of sound set the perfect tone, tying an underlying story of a creative person's journey from angst to ease.

Distinguished drum patterns contributed by producer Matty Amendola, alongside Hill's experimental melodic guitar arrangements, will have audiophiles hitting the repeat button while satisfying the first-time listener with its engaging hook.

The single, joined by its accompanying music video directed by Andy Strohl, premiered on OUT Magazine’s website, with a broadcast debut on THECOOLTV network to follow. Kerchief's sound, previously characterized as "fortified by straightforward lyrics that still leave spaces for a listener’s imagination" (by June Tunes Digest), intuited the intention behind the cinematically produced video.

Unexpected twists and turns with unprecedented artful attention won't be allowed to go unnoticed. "Jack London", slated as a firm follow-up to Kerchief’s 20 city summer tour, is sure to serve the indie rock culture of discovery and whet the appetite of any true music connoisseur.

ANTIGONE RISING Launches GIRL BANDS ROCK Foundation

ANTIGONE RISING
LAUNCHES GIRL BANDS ROCK FOUNDATION
TO HELP EDUCATE & INSPIRE YOUNG GIRLS AROUND  THE WORLD ACCOMPLISH THEIR GOALS

New York, NY - Antigone Rising has announced the launch of their foundation dubbed Girl Bands Rock (www.GirlBandsRock.org)

The official kick off, which took place during the band’s 2nd Annual Antigone Rising BeachFest  in Sea Cliff, NY on September 19th, comes on the heels of a two-week-long trip as Cultural Ambassadors of the United States to Vietnam performing outreach programs, master classes and public concerts.

Since stepping onto the music scene, AR fused their success with helping educate youths around the world on accomplishing goals as Cultural Ambassadors to the United States Government.

Girl Bands Rock is a not for profit foundation set to inspire and educate kids, especially young girls, to pursue careers in the music industry.
Antigone Rising partners with school districts and youth centers to create innovative programming dedicated to building confidence in youth by developing leadership and creative skills through musical workshops, outreach programs and performances.

Realizing that the music industry does not provide enough worthy female role models, especially women in self contained rock bands, the Girl Bands Rock program provides kids the opportunity to see women excel in a male dominated profession and offers them strong female role models to emulate.

As Cultural Ambassadors to the U.S. Government, the band has done outreach programs in Israel and Palestine and has recently returned from an inspiring trip to Vietnam this past July, 2015

The ladies of Antigone Rising have also played a part in LGBTQ advocacy, making news when Kristin Ellis-Henderson appeared on the cover of Time Magazine with wife Sarah Kate Ellis-Henderson, the president/CEO of GLAAD, for a feature on marriage equality.

This past June, the band also came together along with other artists to support LGBT acceptance at the inaugural Concert for Love and Acceptance, presented by Grammy-nominated and Dove Award-winning artist Ty Herndon and GLAAD, and co-hosted by political commentator and author Meghan McCain.

Founding sisters Cathy and Kristen Henderson have always had the same philosophy- play better than the boys and make sure the fans feel like part of the family! That philosophy--along with writing undeniably catchy songs--has allowed this self sustained group to maintain their independence and leave an indelible mark on an industry best known for leaving girl (bands) behind.

For the all-female-boot-stompin'-alt-country-rock band ANTIGONE RISING, helping aspiring young artists while giving back to their community is something that comes second nature to a group that is helping to create music and history.

NEW LGBTQ MUSIC REVIEW: Tús Nua

by Lauren W

It is very rare for me to write a music review here on ATL, but I just couldn't help myself.

Tús Nua are a brand new band from Zagreb, Croatia, although they sound as though they've been performing for a lifetime.

Their sound is already so mature sounding and professional that you'd never know this band was only founded in September of 2014.

This duo is formed of Jordi (guitar/bass/synth/vocals) and Marija (bass/guitar/synth/vocals). Whilst listening to their first EP, "Existence", one cannot go without comparing them to a more modern, female Placebo (a great compliment, in my eyes).

The catchy, edgy rhythm and vocals within each of their songs causes the mind to jump to television and film soundtracks. When I first listened to track #2 on the EP ("Flowing Around"), I couldn't help but think that it wouldn't go amiss as part of a soundtrack to an angsty, sexy television show, such as True Blood or even The L Word.

On their freshman EP, guest drummer Emerge Dora seems to 'get' the band's persona and the way they want to come across, providing extremely fitting beats and clashes to create a sturdy scaffold for each of the tracks.

Self-labelled as 'hard to describe' in terms of genre, the band position themselves as somewhere between alt-rock and shoegaze; or at least a mixture of both, if you will.

It should also be noted that although this twosome hail from Croatia, they sing all of their original songs in the English language. Unfortunately, some listeners are turned off when they cannot understand the lyrics to a song. Personally, I'd listen to Tús Nua even if they sang in German, Arabic, or Zulu - their music is really that good.

You can get a FREE download of Tús Nua's "Existence" EP or listen to it online (also for free!) over at http://tus-nua.bandcamp.com/. Don't miss this.

“Dee has a voice that is so well controlled and so passionate that it resonates through every lyric that she sings”
- Underground Uncovered

“Love Massacre” is the culmination of many months of hard work and songwriting. The song is  a dark RnB lament into the breakdown of a relationship. You can view the official video here:

ANTIGONE RISING Announces New Album, “Whiskey & Wine, Volume 2"

“Whiskey & Wine, Volume 2" Out March 17, 2015
& New US Tour Dates

NEW YORK, NY - Antigone Rising (AR), the New York based all-female rock band, has announced the release of "Whiskey & Wine - Volume 2” in conjunction with new tour dates. Volume 2 will be available on iTunes and AR’s website on March 17th.

The fab four comprised of Nini Camps (lead singer), Dena Tauriello (drums) and founding sisters Kristen Henderson (bass/vocals) and Cathy Henderson (guitar/vocals), are showing no signs of slowing down!

Since releasing "Whiskey & Wine - Volume 1” on iTunes and the band’s official website last year, the band has not only kept busy with a non-stop touring schedule but as well with long studio hours to complete the highly anticipated Volume Two of the double EP project.
"With W&W Vol. 2 the songs have gotten much more personal, the productions a little more elaborate.  These songs all have something to say.” says Kristen  Henderson.  "It's important to the band that we write songs that say something about who we are and what we stand for. We are looking forward to touring and performing the songs for a live audience, getting the crowd's reaction and visiting cities we haven't been to in quite some time. It's going to be a great year for Antigone Rising.

The massive success of Volume One kept the band on the road for the most part of 2014 . The first single “That was the Whiskey”, co-written with Nashville songwriter Lori McKenna (Faith Hill, Little Big Town, Hunter Hayes), premiered on CMT trending in the Top 10 and was nominated in the "Country Song" Category at The 13th Annual Independent Music Awards.

Antigone Rising have toured with such A-listers as Aerosmith and The Rolling Stones; were appointed as cultural ambassadors by the United States government to tour Israel and the Middle East; and have also played a part in LGBTQ advocacy, making news when Kristin Ellis-Henderson appeared on the cover of Time Magazine with wife Sarah Kate Ellis-Henderson (president/CEO of GLAAD) for a feature on marriage equality.

The girls have consistently been turning up everywhere from the pages of Curve Magazine, Billboard, Out Magazine, Buzzfeed, AfterEllen and the Huffington Post to appearances on The Today Show and The Tonight Show, among others.

No one can deny the momentum behind Antigone Rising!

Known for their unique & electrifying live performances featuring toe-tapping beats and powerful vocals, Antigone Rising is not just good; they are insanely good and best experienced live.  And whether on stage or on an iPod, Antigone Rising continues to make a lot of noise!

Up & Coming LGBTQ Music: Georgie Paterson

Georgia Paterson Releases Debut EP ‘Hear Your Voice’

Folk-pop singer-songwriter Georgia Paterson is released her debut EP on February 16th 2015. The EP, entitled Hear Your Voice, has Georgia looking to make an impact on the back of the superb reputation she has already built on the live music scene in South Wales.

Hear Your Voice was produced by Charlie Francis (REM, The Noisettes). Georgia is no stranger to working with renowned musicians - her debut single Thought it Might be You being produced by Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, Mel C) and with Catatonia's Aled Richards on drums. Hear Your Voice also features musicians Jack Egglestone (Future of the left), Angharad Jenkins (Calan) and Daniel Lawrence (Olion Byw).

She could have been a doctor, a clinical psychologist or a scientist – but as it is, Georgia has found her home making her own brand of folk-pop, laced with the fearlessness and confidence of someone who knows just who they are. Georgia is Welsh and wears her heart on her sleeve - much to the benefit of her music, with a raw lyrical honesty lying behind the super ear-worm melodies.

This former BBC Radio Wales Welsh Artist of the Week’s musical influences are both borrowed and found. Bob Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel were taken from the older brother who taught her her first chords. Jewel and The Cranberries, she grabbed onto in her youth and hasn’t let go since. And later discoveries the Indigo Girls and KT Tunstall - the latter Georgia wasn’t sure if she wanted to be her or be with her.

On a personal note, Georgia recently married her girlfriend and has been a supporter of many LGBT events; including playing Cardiff's Big Queer Picnic, Swindon Pride and the European Capital of Sport Unity Cup 2014. Georgia was also a finalist (in the top 3) in Heather Peace’s ‘The Thin Line’ tour support competition.

To co-incide with the release of her EP Georgia has written and recorded a special track for Valentines Day. Called Not Enough Words, it was written for her wife. “I was trying to tell her how much I love her and having that ‘what do I write on the card’ moment”, says Georgia.  The video and song can be found by clicking HERE.

Here are some nice things people have said about Georgia:

“Georgia Paterson merges catchy hook laden nuggets with lyrics that draw you in and make you want to know more. Her songs are refreshing and she looks like she loves what she does...certainly one to watch.” - Alan Thompson, BBC Radio Wales.

"Such a pure voice...fantastic stuff...how beautiful was that, gosh she can play can't she...” - Eleri Sion, BBC Radio Wales.

"Amazing set - utterly brilliant!" - Roath Rocks 2013.

"Future superstar, superb Welsh artist" - The Cwm, BRFM.

“Superb stuff, that was awesome...brilliant...such swagger...she's got it, love it.” - Showcase Wales, GTFM.

LESMUSIC: NEW ANTIGONE RISING VIDEO PREMIERE

ANTIGONE RISING
 THE ALL-FEMALE-BOOT-STOMPIN'-COUNTRY-ROCK BAND
WORLD PREMIERES BRAND NEW MUSIC VIDEO

“GET TO YOU”

Antigone Rising’s brand new music video for their song “Get To You” officially hit cyberspace today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9lYqkLAkuw

The all-female-boot-stompin'-alt-country-rock band filmed the music video with directors Jie Yi and Valerie Lasser during their run of New England tour dates back in March 2014. The catchy track is taken from the band’s newly released EP “Whiskey & Wine - Volume 1", which dropped on iTunes and their official website March 25th, 2014.

The concept of the “Get To You” video is meant to invoke the sense of bonding and spiritual sisterhood that naturally forms and is collectively shared between all band members while on the road, living together in close quarters for long periods of time, be it on a tour bus or on stage.

The music video gives an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse into Antigone Rising’s tight-knit camaraderie which provides all four of them - Kristin Ellis-Henderson, Cathy Henderson, Nini Camps and Dena Tauriello - a much-welcome backbone and support for the long weeks spent away from home and from their loved ones. “Get To You” ultimately shows how on the road, Antigone Rising is a family.

Antigone Rising was the first band on Starbuck’s Hear Music (Lava Records) that exploded into the spotlight selling over 150,000 copies of their debut LP and landing in the top 20 of the “Billboard Heatseekers” chart for an entire year.

Since then Antigone Rising has gone from touring with such prestigious acts as The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, The Allman Brothers Band, The Bangles and Rob Thomas; traveling to the Middle East, spending time in Israel and the West Bank as cultural ambassadors for the United States Embassy, to making national headlines for having its co- founding member, Kristen Henderson featured on the envelope-pushing cover of Time Magazine's Equality issue.

With an enduring success that ensures constant touring, it’s hard to find a band currently busier than Antigone Rising.
In addition to extensively touring across the US, Antigone Rising is also running a packed promotional campaign for not just one but TWO brand new EPs for 2014: the already released 'Whiskey & Wine - Volume 1" and "Whiskey & Wine - Volume 2” due out October 28th.

Doing things very differently with these releases, the band plans to put a laser focus on each and every song on the 2 EPs.
The goal is to stay connected and involved with the fans who have always been the lifeblood of, and the most critical part of the band’s formula for success. Fans can expect loads of Antigone Rising content with videos, behind the scenes footage, and alternate mixes and versions.

Showing no sign of slowing down, at the root of it all, Antigone Rising is keeping their minds focused on one goal: to “Get To You”!
