Top 20 Gorgeous Women 2015

by Lauren W

So way back on September 1st, lesbian favourite AfterEllen.com posted their Hot 100 Women as chosen by the readers.

However, you only have to go as far as the comments at the bottom of the results page to realise that a lot of ladies felt as though Ruby Rose was given the number one spot unfairly. (I should let you know that the AE writers and editors insist that Ruby's position was given to her because she got the most votes.) Either way, I'm not a particularly massive fan of her's either, and I certainly did not vote for her, regardless of whether hundreds of other lesbians did.

As a matter of fact, I only voted for about 4 women because I hit the "enter" button prematurely in excitement and my vote was spoiled. (Sad face.)

Every year bar 2014, I have compiled a list of my personal favourite 20 women (10 votes just isn't enough), and have posed it to the readers of ATL for them to mull it over.

As always, I must reiterate that these ladies are my personal preferences. I am absolutely not going out of my way to discriminate on grounds of race, sexuality, gender identity, etc. What can I say? People are attracted to who they're attracted to.

So, without further rambling, here are my top 20 picks!

#20: Kerry Washington (AfterEllen Place: #100).

Known For: Scandal, Django Unchained, Ray.

Why She's On My List: Okay, so Kerry only barely made my list at number 20, but she slid in by the skin of her teeth on AfterEllen's list at #100! Anyway, I'm obsessed with her. She's gorgeous, for one thing, but she's also one of the most talented actresses on TV right now. Not only that, but she's a huge ally. If you missed her amazing Vanguard award acceptance speech about LGBT rights at the GLAAD awards this year, get yourself caught up by clicking HERE.

#19: Michelle Rodriguez (AE Place: Not on the list!)

Known For: Avatar, The Fast and The Furious, Machete.

Why She's On My List: I was kinda surprised that Rodriguez didn't make AE's list this year. I mean, she dated P.Y.T. Cara Delevigne for Christ's sake! Recently when on vacation in Egypt, an Arabic TV station was showing Machete, and I just couldn't help but re-watch it... And all my feelings for Michelle came rushing back. Man, I'm a sucker for a woman with a (fake) gun wearing jean shorts.

#18: Rochelle Aytes (AE Place: Not on the list!)

Known For: Mistresses, White Chicks, Criminal Minds.

Why She's On My List: When the US remake of Mistresses came to the fore, I watched it because I am a long-time Alyssa Milano fan girl. Clearly, I was happily surprised to find that the beautiful Rochelle was equally (if not more) crush-worthy. We've seen her co-stars (Yunjin Kim who plays Karen, and Jes Macallan who plays Joss) get into some girl-on-girl action, but I'm not gonna lie, I'm refusing to tune back into Mistresses until Aytes gets some of the female sugar.

#17: Famke Janssen (AE Place: Not on the list!)

Known For: X-Men, Hemlock Grove, Goldeneye.

Why She's On My List: She's been on my radar of smoking hot women ever since she played the trans character Ava on Ryan Murphy's medical drama Nip/Tuck. However, most recently, this Dutch beauty has been playing Viola Davis' lover in Shondaland show How To Get Away With Murder, and that made me remember why I've loved her for all these years. Oh, and she's super hot as Jean Grey in the X-Men movies, too.

#16: Portia de Rossi (AE Place: #66).

Known For: Scandal, Ally McBeal, Arrested Development.

Why She's On My List: Does Portia ever really age? I'll give you a clue: no. I've been a fan of Portia's ever since my pre-pubescent brain secretly stayed up way past her bedtime to watch Ally McBeal on VHS. I've recently been re-watching the entire series actually, and I still love Portia as Nelle Porter. More recently, I've been loving her in equal amounts as the perfectly-coiffed Elizabeth North in Scandal. She's an underrated dramatic and comedic actress and she's hot as hell. How could I not include her on here?

#15: Katie Lowes (AE Place: Not on the list!)

Known For: Scandal, Transformers, Wreck-It Ralph.

Why She's On My List: I promise that there are no more Scandal actresses on this list... Look, I don't know what it is about Lowes that makes me want to jump her bones. Maybe it's because she's hot as balls playing a spy/assassin on Scandal. Maybe it's because she's so often overshadowed by the likes of Kerry Washington and isn't given enough gritty material. Maybe it's just those thighs. I don't know. Whatever it is, I'm glad that Katie isn't only known for her voice acting these days.

#14: Kate Winslet (AE Place: #77).

Known For: Titanic, Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, Revolutionary Road.

Why She's On My List: Move over, Cara Delevigne, these are the original eyebrows. If you look up the definition of "English Rose" you'll find a picture of Kate Winslet. Sometimes crushes come and go, but Kate seems to be the one constant in my life. She's so damn attractive, and she just happens to be in one of my favourite movies of all time (Eternal Sunshine). There will never be a list that from me in which she doesn't make an appearance.

#13: Anna Silk (AE Place: #18).

Known For: Lost Girl, Being Erica, Assassins Tale.

Why She's On My List: Do. I. Even. Need. To. Explain. This. One. To. You? Seriously? No. It'd be like preaching to the choir. I mean, can you even imagine anyone else being cast as a drop dead gorgeous bisexual succubus? Yeah, that's what I thought.

#12: Laura Prepon (AE Place: #6).

Known For: Orange Is The New Black, That 70s Show, Karla.

Why She's On My List: So this is the only entry in my list that placed lower than it did on AfterEllen's Hot 100. Why? I have a love/hate relationship with Laura Prepon. I can't decide if I'm attracted to her or her character, Alex Vause, in Orange Is The New Black. Sometimes I see her in interviews and I'm just all "oh, be quiet", and then I see her face on Instagram and I think "actually, you seem pretty cool". No one on this list causes such ~real~ dilemmas in my head. Maybe I'm just attracted to Alex. Whatever, Laura Prepon looks like Alex Vause, so that's good enough for me.

#11: Emilia Clarke (AE Place: #53).

Known For: Game of Thrones, Terminator Genisys, Dom Hemingway.

Why She's On My List: I just. I can't. *Mean Girls voice* How do I even begin to describe Emilia Clarke? She's just. Sigh. She has such a great face. How can one woman have such a perfect face? Oh, and of course I'm a huge GoT fan girl. If I didn't include my Khaleesi on this list then she'd probably feed me to the dragons. #AllHailMhysa

#10: Caterina Scorsone (AE Place: Not on the list!)

Known For:
Private Practice, Grey's Anatomy, Missing.

Why She's On My List: Like Katie Lowes, Caterina is another Shondaland lady I can't figure out why I like so much. I've watched her grow into an amazing actress since her Private Practice days, so it could be that. She's also a Torontonian, and I'm a sucker for the Canadians, so it could be that. She's also half Italian, which is my downfall, so it could be that. Whatever it is, she's far too often overlooked by the lesbians, and she's fine as hell.

#9: Taraji P. Henson (AE Place: Not on the list!)

Known For: Empire, Person of Interest, The Karate Kid.

Why She's On My List: Out of all of the ladies who didn't make the AfterEllen Hot 100 this year, this one surprised me the most. With the year Taraji has had (with the success of Empire and being nominated for a Golden Globe alongside the great Viola Davis), I couldn't believe that Taraji didn't get enough votes to make the top 100. Since I started watching Person of Interest, I knew that this lady was phenomenal. And my God, she's gorgeous too.

#8: Troian Bellisario (AE Place: #48).

Known For: Pretty Little Liars, NCIS, Lauren.

Why She's On My List: The majority of lesbians will be surprised that I've picked this little liar over Shay Mitchell (Mitchell ended up in the top 5 on AfterEllen's list). And don't get me wrong; Shay is beautiful. There's just something about Troian that makes me more attracted to her. It's probably because she's a little more alternative, a little more complex, and an amazing actress in her own right. Not to mention that she played gay this year in Still a Rose; a queer adaptation of the classic Romeo & Juliet. (Click HERE for the trailer, by the way. You're welcome.)

#7: Rachel Skarsten (AE Place: #43).

Known For: Lost Girl, Reign, Fifty Shades of Grey.

Why She's On My List: Are you kidding me? The woman looks like a real life angel! And she is a real life angel, damn it. I have to admit, I don't usually go for the whole blonde hair/blue eyes thing, but Skarsten is too hard to resist. When she's not sucking Anna Silk's face off in the late, great Lost Girl, she's playing British royalty as a redhead Queen Elizabeth I in the CW's Reign. Strong women, hear them roar!

#6: Margot Robbie (AE Place: Not on the list!)

Known For: The Wolf of Wall Street, Neighbours, Focus.

Why She's On My List: Isn't it obvious? Look at the woman. Once again, I was super surprised when she didn't make the AfterEllen list, especially since everyone is going bat shit crazy over her upcoming role as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. She started off in mediocre Australian soap opera, Neighbours, and then won a break-out role in Hollywood as Leonardo DiCaprio's girlfriend in The Wolf of Wall Street. Seems like no one can get enough of her... Me included.

#5: Amy Acker (AE Place: #26).

Known For: Angel, Person of Interest, Much Ado About Nothing.

Why She's On My List: Anyone who knows me will also know that I am obsessed with Person of Interest and the Whedonverse. So there's no surprise that Acker is on this list, considering Sarah Shahi just planted a kiss right on her mouth on CBS. I loved her in Dollhouse, I loved her in Cabin in the Woods, I loved her in everything I've ever seen her in. Not to mention, if you watch any interview with Acker (I recommend THIS fan video, which is pretty much a compilation of some recent PoI interviews), you'll know - to steal the internet's phrase - Amy Acker is literally too good for this world. She's precious. And when she carries two guns, she's also kinda hot.

#4: Aubrey Plaza (AE Place: Not on the list!)

Known For: Parks and Recreation, Addicted to Fresno, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

Why She's On My List: Okay, not only do I have a comedy crush on Aubrey, I also have a general "good God, you're attractive" crush on her. Obviously she was often overlooked when she starred in Parks and Rec, as the lesser known actress on the cast list. However, she made a lasting impression on me. This year also saw her star in Addicted to Fresno, (or as I call it, "a sight for sore eyes"), in which she plays Natasha Lyonne's girlfriend. The fact that she's a bit of a weirdo probably contributes to what makes her so attractive to me, and I'm sure you'll agree... If you're into that sort of thing.

#3: Demi Lovato (AE Place: #58).

Known For: Glee, Sonny with a Chance, The X Factor.

Why She's On My List: Demi came under a lot of scrutiny by the bisexual community this year for saying something like "there's nothing wrong with experimentation" in regards to the girl-on-girl nature of her Cool For The Summer video. At the same time, though, she also hinted that her bisexuality "didn't not stick", so I'm cool with that. Honestly, I've always gotten a gay vibe from her, and now I've seen her kicking some ass in her music video for Confident alongside Michelle Rodriguez, I feel like I'm gonna be crushing on her forever more. And, as I've said before, thick thighs save lives.

#2: Sara Ramirez (AE Place: #40).

Known For: Grey's Anatomy, Spamalot, Sofia the First.

Why She's On My List: Latinas, latinas, everywhere... I guess you could say I have a type. Ever since Ramirez joined the cast of Grey's waaaaaaay back in 2006, I've been a huge fan. And then they gave her a lesbian storyline and had her make out with Jessica Capshaw and I've never looked back. Plus, she can sing. Very well. PLUS, she can act. Very well. A woman with talent and legs like that? You should be noticing a trend in my choices by now...

#1: Sarah Shahi (AE Place: #11).

Known For: The L Word, Person of Interest, Fairly Legal.

Why She's On My List: You have no idea how long it took me to choose a photo for my number 1 spot. Seriously, Shahi looks flawless in every damn photo. You also have no idea how obsessed with her I am. Not only is she a great actress, supportive of the LGBT community, and playing the most badass super-assassin/superhero on TV in Sameen Shaw, she's real. Watch an interview with Shahi and you'll realise almost immediately that she says what she thinks, not what she's been made to think. She's been known to drop the F bomb in the middle of serious conversations. She has no filter. In short, she's not been groomed by her agents and media pressue, and she will do as she pleases, when she pleases. Now that is my kinda woman. I could go on about her for hours. This Iranian-Spanish-American beauty is absolutely my number 1 gorgeous woman this year for a multitude of reasons. And if you haven't watch Person of Interest yet, I am urging you to do so. It started off as a bit of a sausage-fest (minus Taraji P. Henson), and has inadvertently become one of the most feminist, forward-thinking shows of all time. Plus, you get to see Sarah wielding a gun and kicking some serious ass... Oh, and she also kisses Amy Acker. Did I already mention that?

So that's it! I hope you enjoyed reading/browsing this as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

I'd love to hear some of your top 20 picks in the comments! You can also tweet your choices to me at http://twitter.com/allthingsles. Can't wait to hear your thoughts!

"Grey's Anatomy" Creator On Why She Includes Gay Characters

You know that little, low key drama on television, Grey's Anatomy? Of course you do.

Well Shonda Rhimes, the show's creator is responsible for one of lesbianism's current favourite television couples, Calzona.

And as usual, Ms. Rhimes succeeded in giving an applause-worthy response when asked "why she has all the gays on her shows".

Check it out:
“And because I love all my gay and lesbian friends. AND because I think same-sex marriage is the civil rights fight of our era and back when being a person of color was the civil rights fight, people like Norman Lear put black people on TV and helped change some minds. So you know, it's gotta be paid forward. As long as we are willing to sit by while one person is not free, none of us are free.”
Amen, sistah!

*Cue shameless plug of Grey's Anatomy*

If you've never watched it, GO WATCH IT. If not just for the lovely ladies above, a.k.a. Jessica Capshaw (left) and Broadway songstress, Sara Ramirez.

It's gritty, raw drama. Check it out. We've already proved its LGBT friendly!

Ignorant Homophobia On 'The View'.

This week, Grey's Anatomy star Sara Ramirez (who plays bisexual surgeon Callie Torres on the show) appeared on TV talk show, The View.

Here is a video of the interview, courtesy of osayumi on YouTube.

Okay, okay, I'm not one to rant and rave about political correctness, especially when it's in referral to a TV show. But when the topic of lesbian sex came up and the dumb, ignorant bitch on the right of Sara said "you must have a big male audience"? That is not okay at all.

The fact that anyone thinks that lesbian couples should be made the subject of such animalistic voyeurism - by either men or women - is disgraceful.

Yes, I understand that this is a television show: the characters are not real and the point of a television show is to become a voyeur, so to speak. But when statements such as this one are said in a real-life context, it is obvious that if Sara was a lesbian in real life and she spoke about having sex with her wife, that same ignorant hockey Mom would have made a similar comment.

What's more is that when words such as this are broadcast on day time television, it becomes 'okay' for America's children and indeed other adults to spread and take on such disgusting views.

Nowhere in the history of television would you see this happen when talking about a straight couple. For instance, if Sara was in a straight relationship on Grey's, none of the above hosts would have said "I bet the audience masturbate to your sex scenes a lot", yet that is basically what is being said in this interview about a lesbian couple.

The idea that a lesbian couple are together only for the pleasure of straight male onlookers is possibly the one thing that I encounter day-to-day and can not stand. Why should it be okay for public figures to support this theory?

On a lighter note, my friend Rita would like me to point out that Sara is not actually marrying 'Ryan', but is really marrying her. Ryan is just her code name. *

*this is obviously untrue, but we'll play along.

Brittana & Calzona Return!

No, I'm not talking about folded up pizza and I'm not singing "Rule Brittania" to you in honour of my British heritage.

You probably already know, but this week we saw the return of two of our favourite "couples"* to the screen.

First up, we had Glee on Tuesday, which saw the return of Brittany (Heather Morris) and Santana (Naya Rivera).

Now there wasn't much in the way of obvious lesbianism during the season 3 premiere of Glee this week, but we have been promised many a time by the creators, including top dog, Ryan Murphy, that this season we will see Santana accepting herself.

Whether or not Brittany will be by her side is another matter completely, but it'll be interesting to see how the writers handle a lesbian couple on the show. And if the gay couple, Kurt & Blaine, are anything to go by, they'll execute it with class and dignity.

And in Grey's Anatomy this Thursday, we saw the return of Callie (Sara Ramirez), Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and their daughter Sofia.

Last season was a roller coaster ride for Calzona - they moved in together, Arizona moved to Africa, they broke up, Callie got pregnant with Mark's (Eric Dane) baby, they fought, they got back together, they got caught in a car crash, Callie gave birth and they got married.

Did you get all that? I told you it was a roller coaster.

Anyway, this week's double season opener saw Calzona pretty much as a happy couple with a few adorable scenes of the two of them with baby Sofia.

Jessica Capshaw, who plays Arizona, has recently said that Calzona are currently just enjoying married life, but expect something to go wrong for them any time soon.

I mean, it wouldn't be Grey's without drama, right?

Do you lesbos watch either of these shows? What are you hoping will happen next for these couples?

You can catch Glee on FOX, Tuesdays 8/7c and Grey's Anatomy on ABC, Thursdays 9/8c if you live in the States.

*Brittana are not officially a couple, I know, but you just wait.

A TV Lesbian Wedding?!

Yep, that's right.

If you're a fan of lesbian pop culture on the silver screen, you'll know that tonight is the night that Callie and Arizona get married! ARGHHHHHHH!

If you don't understand what I mean, I'm obviously referring to the lesbian couple on ABC's Grey's Anatomy, played by Sara Ramirez and Jessica Capshaw, who are tying the knot tonight.

I suggest, if you have no idea what I'm talking about, that you get yourself on YouTube and educate yourself about Calzona. Or Callizona. Or CapMirez. Whatever you want to call it.

There have already been a TON of spoilers, pictures and behind the scenes clips from the wedding, so if you've seen them you'll probably know what to expect.

But remember, this is Grey's, and they always have some surprises up their sleeves.

I think it is about time, in related news, that they showed a real, feminine lesbian wedding on television. And I'm hoping that this one is better than Carol's wedding to her female lover on Friends, which starred an ugly hat or ten.

Call me vain, but I want to see something realistic and lesbian on television, not something weird and 90s.

Another Struggle For Calzona?

Yep, you must know who I mean when I say 'Calzona' by now.

Obviously I mean gay surgeons from Grey's Anatomy, Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins, played by Sara Ramirez and Jessica Capshaw.

Well, if you don't want to hear a sneak peek of Ramirez singing in the upcoming musical and you're avoiding spoilers, DO NOT WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW.

So what do you lesbians think?

Is the person in the bed who you think it is? Where is Arizona at this time?

I for one am super excited about the musical. I was a bit cautious at first because I thought it'd suck, but this actually looks intense and pretty much what Grey's used to be.

Although Grey's Anatomy is currently on hiatus, you can watch new episodes starting March 24th on ABC.

Calzona Bombshell?

If you're a fan of Grey's Anatomy, (or not a fan, but spend the majority of your day googling 'Calzona' or 'Canzona fanfic',) you'll know that the show is home to one of the best lesbian couples of all time.

Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins make up this dynamic duo, but gossip tells us that something baaaad is going to happen this Thursday evening when Grey's airs.

Previews have been issued to a select few, with one viewer saying:
There’s a giant bombshell dropped in the middle of Callie and Arizona’s relationship. I literally gasped and then yelled at my screen when I found out what it was. OK, make that TWICE. I yelled at my screen TWICE. If there’s one reason to watch this episode, this is it.
EEK! Sounds exciting, right? WRONG! It sounds f*cking awful! I'm thinking of all the worst situations it could be and I am not happy with it. They can't break up again, surely?!

So what do you think this 'bombshell' will be? Will they overcome it? And are you excited to see what it is!?

AfterEllen, We Salute You.

I'm guessing that most of you stumbled upon this blog because of AfterEllen.com.

If you didn't, and you still don't know what AfterEllen is, I'm suggesting that you get there right now.

A lot of my advertising comes courtesy of AE, with links to my blog at the end of every comment I make. (Yeah, I've never published a picture of me on the blog, so click
here if you want to see me.)

Therefore, because of all the good they do for me, I thought they deserved a shout-out from me.

AfterEllen is possibly one of the best, if not the best, lesbian and bisexual entertainment website online today. They often publish new, official gay information before any other websites or news-site, giving gay women the resources they need efficiently.

Founded by Sarah Warn, the website was started in 2002, after she realized that there was so little great lesbian content on the web.

Just recently, the entire site was taken over by writer Karman Kregloe, who also happens to be married to out comedian Bridget McManus, who also happens to vlog on the site. It's like a big chain of inter-connectedness.

Many of the writers also vlog about the pros and cons of lesbianism, entertainment and general civil rights. Great shows such as Skins and Grey's Anatomy are also re-capped, alongside reviews of music, competitions and the occasional opinion poll for the readers to vote on.

So there you have it.

I can't really do the site justice. It's done so much for the lesbian community single-handedly, so you should just get there as soon as you can and check it out.

But don't forget to keep coming here! ;)

Top Lesbian News of 2009.

Yep, we're back for a second year with the top lesbian news of the year. With one difference: this year we'll be talking about 2009. Duh.

So what makes your top 5?

As it often features in the blog, I'd like to point out the arrival of Jessica Capshaw as the only lesbian character on television.

Grey's Anatomy got rid of one lesbian character last year and faced a lot of backlash from the gay community. But when Arizona came along, no one was complaining. Will we see the arrival of any more lesbians on TV in 2010?

In other television news, it seems that beloved(?) cable network show The L Word went off air this year.

The L Word paved the way for lesbian visibility way back in 2004, being the first show star an all female, mostly lesbian cast. However this year, the L Word showcased its final season. And boy, did it go out with a bang. For all the wrong reasons, of course.

We all saw a whole host of celebrities come out this year, too. From Brandi Carlile to Kelly McGillis, Clementine Ford to Megan Fox, 2009 was very good for the visibility of out, famous females.

Teens will obviously be very grateful for the lesbian romance portrayed on TV drama Skins between Naomi (Lily Loveless) and Emily (Kathryn Prescott).

Good news for 2010 too: they're back! And it looks all very dramatic too. Check out the E4 Website if you want to know more.

Of course, we also saw the re-administration of Proposition 8 in California this year. Bad news for all the gay and lesbian couples who were hoping to get married. Good news for the ones who took advantage of the law being overturned previously - they were allowed to stay married legally.

So what was the best (or worst) lesbian news for you this year? And what are you hoping happens next year?

Ming Ahh!

When you're the first person to do anything, you know you're special. For example, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, and I'm guessing he felt pretty great about being the first person to do that.

So who else has done something first? Meet this lady.

That right there is Ming Na, the first regular lesbian character to star in all 16 seasons and 3 movies of the Stargate franchise. Wait, I missed out the first Asian lesbian regular to star on television. EVER! That's right, I don't just mean in Stargate. She is the first regular Asian lesbian character to star on any show that has ever been created.

Screw you Bell, that's an achievement.

In Stargate, we see Na's character Camile and her partner Sharon together. I've been told that the episode titled 'Life' is a great example of fabulous acting and a realistic depiction of lesbians in the real world.

Come to think of it, it sort of sucks that there aren't more gay women of colour or ethnicity on our screens.

We have Latino diva Sara Ramirez on Grey's Anatomy, we previously had bi-racial Jennifer Beals and African American lovely Rose Rollins on lesbian smash The L Word and now we have this Asian beauty.

But that's about it on British and American television. I'm sure there are more, but in comparison to straight women of different ethnic origins, there are hardly any.

The moral of the story is that lesbians are better than telephones.

Ming Na - 1.

Alexander Graham - 0.

Lesbian Love On Grey's!

Pretty much all lesbians only watch Grey's Anatomy for the resident gay couple, Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and Callie (Sara Ramirez).

I know, adorable.

So you won't be surprised that I cried this week after Arizona told Callie that she loved her. Finally, we have a lesbian couple who don't tell each other they're in love within the first week. We finally have a lesbian couple who haven't moved in together within three months. And we definitely don't have a lesbian couple who are going to 'make a baby' any time soon.

But the 'I love yous' were perfectly timed this week. Facial expression and timing was just astonishing between the two actresses: it was like you could tell what they were thinking.

Again, I can't do it justice with my words, the only way to really understand is watching the episode for yourself.

Keep it up, Shonda Rhimes.

If I could visit any state, it'd have to be Arizona...

Can I just take a moment out to appreciate the genius behinds Grey's Anatomy newcomer Jessica Capshaw?

You eagle-eyed L Word fans might have noticed that Capshaw also played schoolgirl Nadia in season five of the show. (She was also awesome in that role too, by the way.)

Anyway yeah, Capshaw equals pure genius. And I'm not just talking about her looks!

As Dr. Arizona Robbins in Grey's, the lovely Jessica brings a level head to the surgery: every week without fail she seems to deliver a speech to a troubled patient or Doctor or some other poor soul, making you instantly fall in love with her.

Last night's episode (October 15th, 2009) saw Capshaw convincing her girlfriend's worried Father that being gay really is okay. Of course I know that the show's chief writer Shonda Rhimes has something to do with the perfection of Arizona, but the way in which Jessica plays her with such conviction brings a tear to my drama-loving eye.

Speaking of conviction, major kudos to Sara Ramirez (who plays Calliope Torres) this week.

Ramirez plays Arizona's girlfriend, who's Father (previously mentioned) is particularly hostile to his daughter's lifestyle choice. What I'm mentioning her for though is that she fought back at her Dad in the most kick ass way this week, it made me actually believe her.

My point is, these two straight (as far as I know!) women are absolutely flawless in their acting, and really do us gay ladies some justice.

What a pair of amazing women.

Lesbian Clichés (Part 1)

Since I know a couple of newbies to the 'lesbian fold' (and no, I don't mean Clementine Ford) I thought I'd blog a couple of clichés signature to lesbians, just to get their balls rolling. Balls? Hypthetically, of course.

Cliché numero uno: Wrist Cuffs.

That's right girls, wrist cuffs aren't just for guys, they're a great giveaway when spotting hot girls out there. Usually leather, the wrist cuff is worn casually with jeans and a vest, à la Jill Bennett. (Check out her left wrist!)

Clearly, they look sexy, especially when you look like Jill...

Cliché numero dos: Chapstick.

No, not because Katy Perry says her 'conquests' wear it. Long before she ever even thought about kissing a girl, we were kissing girls wearing this baby:

There are loads of different brands and it comes in more flavours than Slurpee, which is why we love it! It's small enough to fit in your pocket while you're chatting up the new girl in the coffee shop and it's quick and easy to apply. (Oh, one thing KP did get right: it tastes SO good!)

Cliché numero tres: Cats.

Yeah, so lots of people like cats, gay or straight, but lesbians seem to have some strange obsession with them.

Aww look at it's little eyes! *ahem* That's right, I am no exception to this rule: cats are cute. You'd be hard pushed to find a lesbian with a dog - or any other animal for that matter. Mostly, I'd say it's because they require less attention than dogs and smell much worse. Plus, it's much more comfortable to be sat on by a cat than a dog.

Anyway, Jill Bennett has 2, Willow and Tara had one and I'm pretty sure if I broke into Ellen & Portia's house in the middle of the night, I'd be attacked by one of their super-furry friends.

Cliché numero cuatro: Teva's.

So not every lesbian has a pair, but Teva's are signature to lesbian feet. Just look at them!:

So you wouldn't find them on a femme, that's for sure, but older, butcher lesbians everywhere are seen wearing these.

Cliché numero cinco: Merging the names of a couple to form one collaborative name.

"Huh?" is probably your first reaction. But you'll understand what I mean in a uno momentum. (Excuse the Spanish, I just have Sara Ramirez in my head... If you know what I mean... ;])

This refers to taking the names of 2 lesbians in a relationship and combining their names. For example, take The L Word golden couple Bette & Tina.

Ahh, that picture reminds me of my girlfriend and I. *sigh*... Sorry, back to the point...

Most lesbians will know that Bette + Tina = TiBette. Not to be confused with Chinese plateau Tibet, of course.

Excuse me, I'm going off track again, hah! Anyway, friends of lesbians always merge their friends' names to create one. Another example would be Callie + Arizona = Calzona. (Referring to Grey's Anatomy, obviously.)

I don't know why lesbians in particular do this... Possibly because gay marriage is still only legal in 5 states (ed's note: yay for Maine!) and the majority of us still can't take the name of our loved one in holy matrimony. Pssh.

So that's it: our first 5 lesbian 'clichés'. What would you like to see in the next post, oh experienced lesbians?

EDIT: Okay, okay, so maybe we do this for all couples. But doesn't anyone else think that lesbians do it to the maximum?
