LesBook Review: The Road To Her

by Mickie Green

The Road to Her is the story of Holly Croft, who seems like she’s got her life pretty well sorted.  She’s a recurring character on a popular soap opera, and by the sounds of it, she’s made a mint.  The book starts with Holly receiving the news that her character is shifting to the forefront of the show and striking up a relationship with another lady. Naturally, as a secret lady lover in real life, Holly has no problem with this and is excited to get started.

And this is where her problems begin.

Enter Elise, which I first read as ‘Elsie’ and thought I might have some burgeoning cross-generational romance on my hands.  Fortunately – or perhaps unfortunately depending on your standpoint – I’m just a bit dyslexic.  Elise – who is starring as Holly’s character’s new love interest – is everything you might want from a woman – she’s smart, she’s beautiful, and she’s got a sense of humour.  However, she’s also a bit of a prick – at least to begin with – so our heroine starts off hating the enigmatic newbie.  And thanks to her cruel jibes and Holly’s resulting histrionics, we hate her too, even though we’re 90% sure they’re going to end up shagging.  This brings in just the right amount of angst, until eventually – like Holly – we aren’t really sure when we actually fell for Elise, but we know we fell hard.

The setting – mostly the set of a soap – isn’t one I’ve encountered before and it was interesting seeing a familiar sort of story play out in a completely unfamiliar location. Though the book may have a certain measure of predictability, it was very well executed and there was a nice amount of twists and turns to keep you guessing.

Ultimately, The Road to Her is the kind of novel I wish I’d been able to read back when I was first coming out.  It’s an excellent piece of young adult fiction, and I truly enjoyed it. The message of ‘calm your tits, it’ll be okay in the end’ is hopeful and the two characters are sweet and believable throughout. Recommended!

LESMOVIE REVIEW: Bloomington (2010)

As an addition to this wonderful website of lesbianism, I've decided to begin reviewing a series of lesbian movies, all for your amusement.

The first movie in this series is a movie I watched last night - Bloomington.

Okay, maybe I'm a little late with this one. I'd heard of it, but never forced myself to watch it.

Made in 2010, Bloomington has a plot line not dissimilar to the 2006 lesbian movie, Loving Annabelle.

Teacher-student lesbian relationship? You got it. Take a look:

Stopped staring at that image yet? Okay.

Unlike Loving Annabelle though, we follow a girl who was formally a child TV star named Jackie, who begins a new life at college, in a town aptly named 'Bloomington'.

Give the film, oh, around 15 minutes, and we already have our first lesbian kiss. That's right - unlike many other lesbian movies, this one gets going pretty much straight away. SCORE.

Jackie gets involved with her sexy psych professor, Catherine, who sweeps her off her feet in an instant.

Similarly to the majority however, this lesbian film comes with drama. Lots of drama.

Sure, you'll fangirl over this:

But then you'll lose your shit over... Well, I can't ruin it for you, can I?!

Unfortunately, what would have been a good (if not ultra-cheesy) lesbian movie turns into an old lesbian cliché: the end is abrupt and sort of just fizzles out.

I won't tell you how it ends, but safe to say you're not gonna be happy about it. (Don't base your expectations of this lesbian love story on the likes of The Notebook, because the end will just disappoint the crap out of you.)

But hey... At least no one dies!*

Lesmovie Rating: 7 out of 10 - watch it... but don't expect too much.

*If you don't watch lesbian movies or television a lot, you probably won't know that someone always dies. So this was actually a nice surprise!

Gig Review: Hunter Valentine

Okay, so I saw Hunter Valentine 2 weeks ago and I should have probably reviewed this gig before now... But they still have a lot of touring to do so I figured I'd do it anyway!

If you don't watch The Real L Word, haven't watched Girl/Girl Scene or you're not a fan of Sick of Sarah, Tegan & Sara or An Horse, you probably haven't heard of this quartet.

Okay, I crossed Somer's face out because she's actually not in the band anymore - she was replaced by the incredibly down to earth Amy. (The band really need to do some new photoshoots).

I saw Hunter Valentine in a pretty small venue where I live in Ontario, Canada. There was barely anyone there - I'm not sure whether this was because no one knew about it or because not enough gays were willing to party on a Tuesday - but the band were great nonetheless.

Playing tracks from both old albums and the soon to be released Collide and Conquer, this quartet put on an unforgettable show.

Frontwoman Kiyomi rocks the mic.

My personal favourites were played (Liar Liar and Scarface) so that was a bonus - for me at least!

Both before and after the gig, drummer Laura was my favourite out of the four girls. Not only was she hilarious, but she played the whole gig with a broken ankle. What a trooper.

Laura soldiers on.

Of course it was a little awkward - lack of turn out even made the band feel kind of awkward. I spent a lot of the concert wishing there were more people to show these ladies some support... they really are an awesome band!

Nevertheless, they played on. Kiyomi sort of crowd surfed at one point. Bassist Vero asked which lesbians the two men in the front row belonged to - of course none of us knew who the fuck they were...

Vero - cool as a freakin' cucumber.

What's more is... I got to meet them! Eek!

They were all so lovely: Kiyomi told me she liked my name (duh) and Amy told me I smelled good. Mhmm, I got a compliment from the hot new girl. Jealous?

Fan-girling. *swoon*

I met the other three girls and had pictures with them too but quite frankly, you're not really all that interested, are you? Hah!

Honestly, I wouldn't say I'd choose Hunter Valentine over Uh Huh Her just yet (click HERE to read my review of an UHH gig) but I will say that I think big things are coming for HV.

Not only are they are ridiculously sexy, but they're so down to earth and their music is pretty awesome too.

For more information on Hunter Valentine's US/Canadian tour, click HERE to go to the list of upcoming concerts on the band's website.

p.s. It only cost me $5 to see them. BARGAIN!

Skins recaps the day after the episodes air!

If, like so many Skins fans, you live in the US and can't watch for months but can't wait that long, then look no further.

That's right, funky new review site The Daily Wiggle are publishing a re-cap of the new series of Skins every Friday before pretty much any other website.

Good news (maybe) for you: The review will be written by yours truly. That means you can expect plenty of information on this gorgeous pair:

The first 3 episodes have already been re-capped, so head to www.thedailywiggle.com to catch up! Episode 2 was all about Emily (played by Kathryn Prescott), so expect plenty of dyke drama there.

This Friday, Emily's twin sister Katie (Megan Prescott) gets her turn in the forefront, which probably means there'll be quite a bit of Naomily thrown in there.

I look forward to seeing you there!

AfterEllen, We Salute You.

I'm guessing that most of you stumbled upon this blog because of AfterEllen.com.

If you didn't, and you still don't know what AfterEllen is, I'm suggesting that you get there right now.

A lot of my advertising comes courtesy of AE, with links to my blog at the end of every comment I make. (Yeah, I've never published a picture of me on the blog, so click
here if you want to see me.)

Therefore, because of all the good they do for me, I thought they deserved a shout-out from me.

AfterEllen is possibly one of the best, if not the best, lesbian and bisexual entertainment website online today. They often publish new, official gay information before any other websites or news-site, giving gay women the resources they need efficiently.

Founded by Sarah Warn, the website was started in 2002, after she realized that there was so little great lesbian content on the web.

Just recently, the entire site was taken over by writer Karman Kregloe, who also happens to be married to out comedian Bridget McManus, who also happens to vlog on the site. It's like a big chain of inter-connectedness.

Many of the writers also vlog about the pros and cons of lesbianism, entertainment and general civil rights. Great shows such as Skins and Grey's Anatomy are also re-capped, alongside reviews of music, competitions and the occasional opinion poll for the readers to vote on.

So there you have it.

I can't really do the site justice. It's done so much for the lesbian community single-handedly, so you should just get there as soon as you can and check it out.

But don't forget to keep coming here! ;)

Myself and 2 of my friends have started a whole new website!
