"HOT AS L": THE L WORD STARS To Attend The DINAH
Wednesday, 30 December 2009
Top Lesbian News of 2009.

Grey's Anatomy got rid of one lesbian character last year and faced a lot of backlash from the gay community. But when Arizona came along, no one was complaining. Will we see the arrival of any more lesbians on TV in 2010?
In other television news, it seems that beloved(?) cable network show The L Word went off air this year.

The L Word paved the way for lesbian visibility way back in 2004, being the first show star an all female, mostly lesbian cast. However this year, the L Word showcased its final season. And boy, did it go out with a bang. For all the wrong reasons, of course.
We all saw a whole host of celebrities come out this year, too. From Brandi Carlile to Kelly McGillis, Clementine Ford to Megan Fox, 2009 was very good for the visibility of out, famous females.
Teens will obviously be very grateful for the lesbian romance portrayed on TV drama Skins between Naomi (Lily Loveless) and Emily (Kathryn Prescott).
Good news for 2010 too: they're back! And it looks all very dramatic too. Check out the E4 Website if you want to know more.
Of course, we also saw the re-administration of Proposition 8 in California this year. Bad news for all the gay and lesbian couples who were hoping to get married. Good news for the ones who took advantage of the law being overturned previously - they were allowed to stay married legally.
So what was the best (or worst) lesbian news for you this year? And what are you hoping happens next year?

Clem Does It Again.

And for real this time: we can officially label Ford a new addition to our list of celesbian friends.
Clem finally cracked this week and said:
I am gay. I just wanted there not to be this big emphasis on it. There are people who get it, and get what my original meaning was. Just as I was talking about storylines being a non issue on The L Word; it should just be these people are gay and it’s part of life. I think with that article, and what came across as ambiguity, was actually my attempt at making it a non issue. So there you have it, the 'ambiguity' stops there. Welcome to the fold, Ford.

Clementine Ford goes back in the closet...

However, now she is saying the complete opposite. She claims that she never came out, and just spoke about how she didn't want to put a label on herself.
The article also pushed forward false rumors about Clemetine's private life with Kate Moennig (aka Shane McCutcheon) and twisted what she said about her work on The L Word.
She said of the article:
That Diva article also picked up quotes from a podcast interview I did with AfterEllen.com where the interviewer asked me if the sex on The L Word was real, and I very jokingly said, “Yes, we actually had sex. The L Word is porn. The secret’s out!” And the Diva writer printed it as fact that Kate and I had real sex on camera! I was like, “Oh, my God, I hate you!” I almost wrote a nasty letter and then I stopped myself because I thought, if anyone is stupid enough to actually believe that Showtime would let us have real sex, then that’s not my problem. So that was that. But it made me very angry. So there we have it. Sorry to burst your bubble ladies... Still, whatever our Clem classes herself as, she's still beautiful.

Batwoman Comes Out!

Also, going back to the comparison with Clemetine Ford, just because she's not real doesn't mean it doesn't gain just as much lesbian publicity. It's almost as good as what would happen if Batman was actually African American!
Batwoman aside, which other cartoon characters do you think are secretly gay/lesbian? Obviously there's speculation about Peppermint Patty and Velma from Scooby Doo. But what do you think?
Personally, I think Lisa Simpson would make a great lesbian lawyer when she finally grows up...

Clementine Ford comes out!

Ford said "I never want to put a label on myself — but knowing that not everyone comes from such a liberal place, when something like Prop 8 comes out, you realize it’s important to stand up and be counted. A little gay kid in a small town is more important than whether I want a label."
There has been speculation over whether the lovely lady is gay or bisexual, but my guess is that she is bisexual, as she has been married to a guy before... Still, great visibility for us homos!
She also told the magazine that her and her siblings would bring both guys and girls home, and 'as long as they were human, it didn't matter.' Amen to that!
For an unbearably charming video of Clementine, go here to watch her being harassed by lesbian comedy legend Liz Feldman.
