BURY YOUR GAYS: If a pay phone rings in New York, did the lesbian really die at all?

by Lauren W

First off, I'm cautiously apologetic about my absence from All Things Lesbian. My absence largely stems from the fact that I have genuinely still not gotten over the fact that Person of Interest has come to an end and I was dreading writing this post. It is 100% the best show of the decade, and it will take something extra special to top it.

Secondly, there are quite obviously going to be SPOILERS in this post so please do not read on if you are planning to watch POI at some point in your life. (And I'm begging you: please watch it. It is truly genius and you will not regret it.)

Back in April, I wrote something similar to this following the whole death of Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey) debacle. (Click HERE to read it).

A face so perfect it could sink a thousand ships.
The cliff notes version of my April post is as follows: all of the lesbians on TV die, Person of Interest could be our last hope for a happy gay ending, the show starts May 3rd and you should all watch it. Blah Blah Blah.

So, I intend this article to be a follow up to that, now that we know the outcome. A "Part Two", if you will.

As I've stated before, POI is not a show that saves it's MVPs just for the sake of it. The writers never shied away from killing off it's main characters and even led us to believe that Shaw (Sarah Shahi) had sacrificed her life for the team in the show's fourth season.

Alas, the TV Gods saved the bisexual sociopath in the end.

Season 5 of the show was a whirlwind: There were 2 (and sometimes 3!) episodes per week, which meant it was over before you could say "Artificial Intelligence: Modern Warfare".

And it was all going so well. Shahi and Amy Acker (Root) were killing it Every. Single. Week. Episode 4 came as a Shaw-centric episode which brought us the likes of this:

*Bohemian Rhapsody voice* Is this the real life... is this just fanfiction?
Oh, and this:

Aaaaaand this:

You can thank me later.

We saw Shaw escape Samaritan's clutches, the couple being reunited, overt flirting in the middle of a shoot out... they even held hands. (If you never watched the show, you probably won't understand why this pair holding hands killed so many fangirls, but listen to me when I say it was IMPORTANT.)

And then, the thing happened...

The thing.

I was holding out (false) hope that neither one of them would die but then Root was gone in a flash. Killed by a bullet. (Not a stray bullet, though - she swerved in front of it to save Harold. A true hero and a mighty fine Gryffindor/Slytherin cross-breed indeed).

Everyone went insane. Some die hard fans refused to watch the final four episodes that followed. Personally, I couldn't eat for three days straight after I learned of what happened.

I need to make a sidebar at this point to wax lyrical about how strong an actress Amy Acker really is. She's so versatile and one of the most (if not the most) talented actresses on television if you ask me. For the second time, she played a character who transcended and transformed into a God (the first instance being Illyria in Angel), and absolutely nailed it. The subtle nuances that you cannot help but notice when you watch her play Root in comparison to when she plays The Machine are impeccable. I can't even begin to sing her praises enough. She's a literal ray of sunshine.

An honourable mention also goes to Sarah Shahi. She really got to show off her acting chops this season and played Shaw's character absolutely perfectly. Having an Axis II Personality Disorder can't be the easiest thing to portray, but Shahi got the whole "acting with your eyes" thing on point. She really has come a long way since Carmen de la Pica Morales. If she doesn't get to play a comic book hero at some point, there's something wrong with the world.

Don't worry, Carmen. We still love you too.
Anyway, let's not beat around the bush. Root died. She was gone. But then...

In the last (ever) scene of Person of Interest, we saw Shaw wearing what we can only assume was Root's leather jacket walking down the street with Bear. And then a pay phone rang.

Of course, we didn't hear what Machine!Root said on the phone and the writers stated that they left everything open ended so that the viewers could create their own ending. But obviously, lesbians are loyal as fuck to their fictional sisters and it could only mean one thing: Root was alive.

Look at that face. Try and tell me that Root isn't alive.
Furthermore, since the finale aired, Michael Emerson (who plays Finch on the show) revealed that there was a scene in which a mysterious figure riding a motorcycle appeared towards the end of the episode, but it got cut. And who likes to ride motorcycles?

That's right: This nerd.
For me, there's no other explanation. Root lived. She faked her own death in order to "become" the Machine and hide from Samaritan until it was safe for her to return.

The whole thing made me think of that old saying about the tree falling in the forest and nobody being around to hear it. You know the one.

Well in my analogy, Root is that fallen tree. None of Team Machine actually saw her die, and just because we briefly saw her corpse means nothing in this show: Shaw momentarily died in the season 2 episode Relevance, too. Did she really die if nobody was around to see it?

So, the updated version of that old saying now goes as follows: If a pay phone rings in New York, and nobody but Shaw could hear it, did Root really die at all?

The Most Star-Studded DINAH SHORE WEEKEND in History!

PALM SPRINGS, CA - There are absolutely no words to encapsulate what happened at the 2016 Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend. To say that the event gave enough reasons to experience a severe case of FOMO is to put it mildly. Pulling all the stops, the event was not just epic, but was also pure magic.

The famed weekend was filled with unique moments, exceptional firsts, unforgettable milestones, and unexpected surprises that made up for one of the most surreal and mind-blowing Dinah ever.

The legendary Palm Springs’ signature event defied all expectations on so many different levels. From Kate Moennig and Camila Grey (aka The X-Names) giving an exclusive surprise performance Friday night, to Golden Globe winner and international pop icon Lady Gaga making her unexpected return to The Dinah enjoying a little fun in the sun at the Saturday Cabana Pool Party with buddy Samantha Ronson, one thing for certain is that you never know what extraordinary thing might happen at The Dinah.

There are plenty of good reasons to want to experience The Dinah, be it the massive pool parties, the star-studded red carpet soirees, the top-notch live concerts by established performers and fast-rising newcomers, the celebrity sighting, or the hottest DJs and dancers around the world. But while The Dinah might represent different things for everyone, the one common thread is its unique ability to bind us all together as one big family and organically impart a sense of solidarity and normalcy.

“The message is always the same: Here’s a space for you to celebrate your life, live out loud, and simply love,” says Mariah Hanson, founder and producer of Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend.

The empowering effect of the event was already palpable in its stellar entertainment roster led by a strong and diverse presence of kick-ass female artists such as celebrity DJs Samantha Ronson, L Word iconic star, Kate Moennig & UH HUH HER’s lead singer Camila Grey (who together form The X-Names), newcomer JoLivi, and one of Rap’s most vocal and lyrical MC’s,  Angel Haze.  And if “girl power” was the flavor of the weekend, the color du jour at The Dinah was certainly orange with Orange is the New Black stars DJ Taryn Manning (Tiffant “Pennsatucky” Doggett) spinning at the Sunday Pool Party and comedian Lea DeLaria (Big Boo) headlining the comedy show Saturday night.

It was a weekend of high-energy performances whether singing in front of a mic or spinning records behind the turntables.

Perpetuating the rise of women and now transgender DJs behind the decks, the Dinah put an extra focus on trail-blazing DJs with a diverse group of incredibly talented tastemakers who more than hold their own in this boy’s club: Dj Amara, DJ Asha, DJ Lezlee, DJ Angie Vee, DJ Automaton, Citizen Jane, DJ GoodBoy, DJ M.O., DJ Val G, and Leah V.

Also in attendance were some of our LGBT community’s most influential Youtubers including: ElloSteph, Arielle Scarcella, Ari Fitz, Ambers Closet, Bria And Chrissy, It’s Ally Hill, Shannon and Cammie, and Life of Bly.

Another smash hit at this year’s Dinah Shore Weekend was the Hot as L Pool Party hosted in association with Showtime - a Dinah exclusive.  Saluting a memorable era in lesbian culture, the event reunited some of the iconic series’ beloved actors including Clementine Ford, Elizabeth Keener, Tracy Ryerson, Amanda Leigh Dunn and Hunter Valentine who performed their farewell show to thank the fans for one hell of an amazing ride.

And while the Dinah was the all-female punk rock band’s scheduled last stop, it also marked pop music’ s new “it” girl’s first ever concert.World famous cover girl and super model Madison Paige gave an emotional but absolutely formidable first live concert on Sunday officially debuting her music career at Dinah.

Yes, The Dinah 2016 was the most star studded Dinah Shore Weekend in history. But above it all, it was the most profoundly transformative and empowering Dinah EVER.

“I keep on hearing how this was the best Dinah yet, which of course puts a huge smile on my face.  I'm proud of my staff. They all execute the administrative part of the weekend with such grace even when under pressure. Of course, I’m also grateful and thankful to our incredibly wonderful and appreciative customers who remind us of exactly why we do what we do.  The magic of The Dinah is undeniable and irreplaceable, “ says Mariah Hanson. “I'm so moved and touched, I am already planning for next year  -- bigger and better!”

LAUREL HOLLOMAN
JOINS CLUB SKIRTS DINAH SHORE WEEKEND’S CELEBRATION OF THE 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE L WORD

ICONIC CAST MEM7BERS KATE MOENNIG (SHANE), LEISHA HAILEY (ALICE) AND LAUREL HOLLOMAN (TINA) EXCLUSIVELY REUNITE AT THE DINAH’S "L WORD POOL PARTY” PRESENTED IN ASSOCIATION WITH SHOWTIME

PALM SPRINGS, CA – Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend has just announced the addition of Laurel Holloman to its celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the L Word’s TV premiere.

Holloman, better known as Tina Kennard, will be joining her former co-stars Kate Moennig (Shane McCutcheon) and Leisha Hailey (Alice Pieszecki) for an exclusive cast member reunion at the Dinah’s “L Word Pool Party” presented in association with Showtime.

The L Word actress and accomplished painter will be showing and selling her prints of a series entitled “Written on the Body”, poolside at the Palm Springs Hilton Hotel, all day, Saturday, April 5 during the L Word Pool Party and Sunday April 6 during the “Wet & Wild Pool Party”.

Holloman’s appearance at the Dinah will mark her second exclusive private showing for Club Skirts, something she wanted to give to her fans and art lovers for their continuous support. Dinah attendees will be able to purchase posters of her pieces and meet with The L Word star that will be on hand to personally sign each copy.

We all remember the famous episode in Season One that saw Shane, Alice, Jenny, and Dana embark on an eventful road trip to The Dinah. Not only did we found out about Bette and Tina’s first kiss, were privy to a few comical moments between the gang, got introduced to weird Tonya, but most importantly we also were given for the first time ever on national TV an exclusive preview of what the legendary Dinah Shore weekend was all about.

Now a decade later, Club Skirts and SHOWTIME are proudly commemorating the nostalgia of a memorable era in lesbian culture that celebrated out loud our “girls in tight dresses who drag with mustaches” with three of its most beloved characters!

Holloman began her film career with her breakout role as Randy Dean in The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love. She has appeared in many independent and feature films including Boogie Nights and Tumbleweeds. Most recently she had an 18 episode stint on TeenNick's Gigantic, which co-starred Meryl Streep's daughter Grace Gummer. But it was her iconic role as Tina Kennard opposite Jennifer Beals (aka Bette Porter) on The L Word that not only earned her a Golden Satellite Award as Best Actress in a Drama series, but also captured our hearts and forever got her the undivided attention of millions of lesbians around the world.

After acting for 20 years, she successfully made the transition to the art world solidifying her reputation as an established abstract expressionism artist known for using intense colors and mural-sized canvases.

Since the launch of her studio, LaurelHollomanStudio.net, Holloman's artistic career has naturally evolved from painting for charities, to solo exhibits in Europe. After hosting her first two solo art shows “Coeur Libre” and “Free Falling” in Paris, France, and Venice, Italy, respectively, she recently presented her new exhibition of large scale murals called "All The World Inside” at the sumptuous “Palazzo Italia” in Berlin, Germany.

One of her greatest acknowledgement in the art world came in June 2013 when she was invited to exhibit her painting, "Swell," in the 55th“Biennale”, the prestigious international arts festival held in Venice, Italy. In addition, in 2012  “Let Me Fall” sold for a record 125,000 Euros - a breaking price point record for female painters.

A true Renaissance woman, Holloman is at once a talented actress, exquisite painter and devoted mother to her two daughters Lola and Nala.  And before hopping on her next flight to Europe for another exhibition of her spectacular portfolio, she will be at The Dinah in Palm Springs, CA, autographing posters of her  “Written on the Body” artwork for fans to add to their L Word memorabilia collection!

"Holloman's paintings take us elsewhere, and at the end of the day, this is what art is all about" - Lea Mattarella, art critic La Repubblica

“Holloman has created an oeuvre that distances itself from all attempts at facile art categorization.  Her paintings are timeless, neither backward looking nor asserting a renewal of any specific theoretical concept of what painting ought to achieve.”   - Gesine Borcherdt, review from ALL THE WORLD INSIDE, Berlin, Germany
