Gig Review: Hunter Valentine

Okay, so I saw Hunter Valentine 2 weeks ago and I should have probably reviewed this gig before now... But they still have a lot of touring to do so I figured I'd do it anyway!

If you don't watch The Real L Word, haven't watched Girl/Girl Scene or you're not a fan of Sick of Sarah, Tegan & Sara or An Horse, you probably haven't heard of this quartet.

Okay, I crossed Somer's face out because she's actually not in the band anymore - she was replaced by the incredibly down to earth Amy. (The band really need to do some new photoshoots).

I saw Hunter Valentine in a pretty small venue where I live in Ontario, Canada. There was barely anyone there - I'm not sure whether this was because no one knew about it or because not enough gays were willing to party on a Tuesday - but the band were great nonetheless.

Playing tracks from both old albums and the soon to be released Collide and Conquer, this quartet put on an unforgettable show.

Frontwoman Kiyomi rocks the mic.

My personal favourites were played (Liar Liar and Scarface) so that was a bonus - for me at least!

Both before and after the gig, drummer Laura was my favourite out of the four girls. Not only was she hilarious, but she played the whole gig with a broken ankle. What a trooper.

Laura soldiers on.

Of course it was a little awkward - lack of turn out even made the band feel kind of awkward. I spent a lot of the concert wishing there were more people to show these ladies some support... they really are an awesome band!

Nevertheless, they played on. Kiyomi sort of crowd surfed at one point. Bassist Vero asked which lesbians the two men in the front row belonged to - of course none of us knew who the fuck they were...

Vero - cool as a freakin' cucumber.

What's more is... I got to meet them! Eek!

They were all so lovely: Kiyomi told me she liked my name (duh) and Amy told me I smelled good. Mhmm, I got a compliment from the hot new girl. Jealous?

Fan-girling. *swoon*

I met the other three girls and had pictures with them too but quite frankly, you're not really all that interested, are you? Hah!

Honestly, I wouldn't say I'd choose Hunter Valentine over Uh Huh Her just yet (click HERE to read my review of an UHH gig) but I will say that I think big things are coming for HV.

Not only are they are ridiculously sexy, but they're so down to earth and their music is pretty awesome too.

For more information on Hunter Valentine's US/Canadian tour, click HERE to go to the list of upcoming concerts on the band's website.

p.s. It only cost me $5 to see them. BARGAIN!

Expedia: Supporting Gay Marriage

Hey you gays! Remember Jill & Nikki from the first season of the Real L Word?

Yes, the "normal ones", you remember correctly.

Well, you may or may not know that Expedia recently followed Jill's path to marrying Nikki in one of their adverts.

I knew about the commercial but only just got round to watching it... So in case you haven't seen it either, I've decided to post it here on my blog too!

Adorable, right?

Oh, and just for a bit of fun I've decided to share with you the hilarity of some of the comments the ad has received on YouTube:

Because there is clearly only one opinion on this matter...

Tell that to Bob & Carl next door who used their sperm to create two beautiful baby daughters.

Ah, the old "gay people are perverts" argument. Blah Blah.

There was a time when everyone became gay?... SHOW ME THIS MYSTICAL LAND OF RAINBOWS AND UNICORNS!
And then there was one legend who replied to the above comment with the argument "Well my dear, if everyone become a catholic priest or nun, how the hell we gonna have next generation?" I've never heard that argument before. KUDOS.

Small City Pride: Peterborough, ON

Why have I been absent from my blog for a month, you ask? Well, I have moved to CANADA!

Yep, I've only been here for two weeks and already it feels like home. Take a look:

That's right, I've got myself a little Canadian family already. (When I say Canadian, I mean international. Some of the people in that photograph are from places like South Africa, Australia, Trinidad, Norway, The Netherlands... I could go on.)

Alas, I am only here for one year, but I can say that this crazy shit has already happened:

I am forever embarrassing myself to make people laugh, don't judge.

But why am I telling you all this, you ask?

Well, I also have myself a little GAY Canadian family forming too!

This weekend it was Peterborough Pride day in Ontario, so I thought I'd give you the low down.

Although its probably the smallest pride I've ever been to (the English prides in Manchester, London, Birmingham and Nottingham that I've been to are always on the large side), there was a great sense of community and, uh... pride.

My friends and I ended up in the parade by accident, but it ended up being the highlight of the day.

Although we have absolutely no affiliation with Peterborough Youth Services, we thought that marching amongst their people was most appropriate - I'm actually classed as an adult, but as a student I feel that 'youth' applies to me too.

So yeah, we partied down the streets and ended up in a field with a few gay stalls and a beer tent. Canadian alcohol regulations are pretty weird though, so we had to stay in the tent to drink. (This would never happen in England - pride = drinking in the streets).

For me, that was a downfall, but I still got to spend some time with some awesome people, including my main man, Dale, who I soberly danced with for the entire duration of the day.

Was it the best pride I've ever been to? No. But would I go again? For sure.

...as long as I have these people with me:

Do you have any small town pride experiences? What about tales of city prides? Tell me about them below!

The Real L Word: New York vs. LA

Let's face it: everyone watches reality shows.

Love them or hate them, everybody has seen at least a part of some white trash TV reality show. Even my Dad (quite a conservative man) watches the UK equivalent of Jersey Shore.

Yet for us gay ladies, reality shows rarely include lesbian activity. (We'll discount Big Brother, The Glee Project and America's Next Top Model, which occasionally include lesbian contestants and content.) So The Real L Word must be a must-see, right?

Well actually, no.

Most lesbians hate the show and think it puts lesbians across as a bunch of crazy, tattooed bitches who cause drama everywhere they go. (Which in my opinion, isn't that much of a stretch from the truth!)

Anyway, I got dragged in by the lure of its evil, trashy advances and decided to watch season 3.

This year (unlike previous years) The Real L Word crosses between New York and LA to show the lesbian scene on both sides of the US.

The New York persuasion includes lesbian band, Hunter Valentine (pictured below), who we see get into all kinds of trouble. (Especially Kiyomi, that girl is drama in human form.)

Over on the West Coast, we see the return of old favourites Whitney Mixter and Sara Bettencourt (below), along with the "normal" couple on the show, Cori and Kacy.

There's also appearance by Romi Klinger (who I personally despise with everything that I am) and a few new faces, such as Amanda Leigh Dunn and Lauren Bedford Russell.

But have you been watching? Honestly, I'd recommend watching this season. There have been tears, fights and sex, but it is actually such a fun show to watch.

If you have been watching, who is your favourite?

Comment below with your opinions or vote in the poll to the right!

Paily: Do You Ship It?

So a lot of you watch ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars, right?

I understand a lot of you gays were disappointed with the death of this lady:

Yep, 1 half of the adorable couple dubbed "Emaya" was found dead last season on the show, but there's a new(ish) girl in town.

Emily Fields' (Shay Mitchell) new love interest comes in the form of Paige, a fellow swimmer and a former closet case.

Last episode, we saw Emily realise she liked Paige and they kissed in an almost fairytale-like scene.

But do you ship it? Honestly, I think I prefer Emaya, but I'm willing to give Paige a chance.

Let me know your thoughts and tune in to PLL this Tuesday (if you're in the States) on ABC Family at 8/7c.

Top 20 Gorgeous Ladies 2012

You may or may not know that every year I post my favourite 20 Gorgeous Ladies to correspond with the AfterEllen Hot 100.

As I state every time I do this: this list is my own personal opinion and personal preference. In no way do I expect you to agree with me, this list is just for your enjoyment!

So here we go...

20) Kristen Stewart (New Entry).

Known For: TwilightThe Runaways, having little facial expression.

Why She's On My List: I've actually only recently started to find Kristen attractive... But I think that's because she did those ELLE photoshoots in which she looked gorgeously androgynous.

19) Audra McDonald (New Entry).

Known For: Private Practice, Broadway's Porgy & Bess, that magnificent soprano voice.

Why She's On My List: She's mostly my talent crush. She's amazing and perfect in every way and if you don't know her work, at least YouTube it. (She's gorgeous as well, don't get me wrong!)

18) Anna Silk (New Entry).

Known For: Lost Girl, Earthstorm, being the hottest Succubus in Canada.

Why She's On My List: Hot damn, just look at her. You want more explanation? Also, if you watch Lost Girl I'm sure you'll have taken note of that splendid rack of her's.

17) Camila Grey (New Entry).

Known For: Being part of the bands Uh Huh Her, Mellowdrone and being Leisha Hailey's girlfriend.

Why She's On My List: Not gonna lie, I didn't find Cam that hot until recently. Then I saw Uh Huh Her live, drooled everywhere and fell in love with how awesomely cool Cam was.

16) Caterina Scorsone (Last Year: 12).

Known For: Private Practice, Alice, being such an underrated actress.

Why She's On My List: This year saw Caterina's character, Amelia, on Private Practice become a crack addict and then give birth to a baby born without a brain. Stellar acting with a pretty face to go alongside it. What's not to like?

15) Shay Mitchell (New Entry).

Known For: Pretty Little Liars, Degrassi, playing an adorable and believable lesbian on-screen.

Why She's On My List: She's smoking hot. Just look at her! Her face is flawless. Oh and her character, Emily, in Pretty Little Liars is a lesbian, meaning we get to see her kiss girls on a regular basis. Wonderful.

14) Leisha Hailey (New Entry).

Known For: The L Word, being the other half of band Uh Huh Her, being multi-talented and therefore fabulous.

Why She's On My List: Who hasn't had a crush on Leisha since The L Word? Oh, you haven't? Yeah, didn't think so. She's adorable, quirky and seeing her live in concert this year made me want to squeeze her. So cute.

13) Natasha O'Keeffe (New Entry).

Known For: Playing the ever perfect Sadie in BBC lesbian drama, Lip Service.

Why She's On My List: Uh, hello?! Have you seen her in Lip Service? I mean, I know those sex scenes are only acting, but man, does she look like she knows what she's doing...

12) Lea Michele (Last Year: 7).

Known For: Glee, Broadway's Les Miserables, her astounding vocal chords.

Why She's On My List: When people think of Lea, they often just think of Rachel Berry. But she is so damn hot in real life, I'm not even sure how to complete this sentence...

11) Eliza Dushku (Last Year: 6).

Known For: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse, that ever so sexy, raspy voice.

Why She's On My List: There's never a minute where Dushku is not hot. Her lips, her voice, her flowing hair... Sigh. She's gorgeous and a pretty good actress, if I say so myself.

10) Zoie Palmer (New Entry).

Known For: Lost Girl, Devil, being an impossibly hot doctor.

Why She's On My List: I like to thank Zoie for some of the hottest lesbian scenes in the history of television, while at the same time she's adorable. However, if you look up any behind the scenes interviews of Zoie, you'll see that she's hilarious. Nothing hotter than wit.

9) Drew Barrymore (New Entry).

Known For: E.T., Scream, a shit load of other A list films.

Why She's On My List: I've always been a huge, huge fan of Drew. She could probably be my definition of the perfect woman: funny, sexy, intelligent... So I felt it was about time to include her on my list.

8) Lady Gaga (Last Year: 5).

Known For: Being Lady freakin' Gaga, don't ask such stupid questions.

Why She's On My List: There's something so incredibly sexy about pop music's "weirdest" star. Maybe its her risque clothes, maybe its her voice, maybe its that ass. I don't care what it is, all I know is she's damn fine.

7) Kate Winslet (New Entry).

Known For: Titanic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Revolutionary Road, The Reader... Should I go on?

Why She's On My List: She is the main British actress of our time. She's incredibly sexy and yet still retains this sense of innocence. Also, I'm insanely attracted to her in Eternal Sunshine when she has red hair, I can't help it.

6) Ksenia Solo (New Entry).

Known For: Lost Girl, Black Swan, having some of the best lines on Lost Girl.

Why She's On My List: She's stunning. And not in that big-breasted, Kim Kardashian kind of way. She's a classic beauty and she's miraculous. Also, she's trained in ballet, which gives anyone an advantage in my book.

5) Sasha Alexander (Last Year: 20).

Known For: Rizzoli & Isles, NCIS, being one half of the gayest-straight pairing on television.

Why She's On My List: She's adorable, funny, quirky, cute, talented... I could go on for a while. All in all, she deserves a spot this high on the list, mainly because of the hair porn she provides on Rizzoli & Isles, while creating all that chemistry between herself and Angie Harmon.

4) Jessica Capshaw (Last Year: 2).

Known For: Grey's Anatomy, The L Word, being Steven Spielberg's step-daughter.

Why She's On My List: Those blue eyes, her perfect hair, her smile, perhaps? And she maintains all of this while having 3 children. Not sure how she does it but damn, I love her.

3) Jessie J (New Entry).

Known For: Being the 'voice' of the year, in the USA, the UK and pretty much everywhere else.

Why She's On My List: She's sassy, she says what she thinks... Oh yeah, she's bisexual. Jessie is the highest Brit on my list, and her voice is phenomenal. I have a love-hate relationship with her, but I'm sure if she was my girlfriend I could get over the hate part...

2) Sara Ramirez (Last Year: 1).

Known For: Grey's Anatomy, Broadways' Spamalot, being overly sexy without even trying.

Why She's On My List: Last year, Ramirez was my number one. It took a lot not to put her first again this year because it seems that as the years go on, the hotter she gets. Also, she can sing so well I get goosebumps every time I listen so... Yeah, that's why she's on this list.

So, who's number 1? A new entry? An actress? A singer? Check it out...

1) Troian Bellisario (New Entry).

Known For: Pretty Little Liars, NCIS, oh and her Father's the creator of NCIS too. No biggie.

Why She's On My List: As Spencer Hastings on Pretty Little Liars, Troian is absolutely perfect. She's witty, gorgeous, incredibly smart... So of course I had to google her. Then I found out that Troian loves tumblr, she loves to sing and she's a fan of Arcade Fire. She's my perfect woman in every way. Don't even try and stand between us.

So what did you think of my list? Who would you add? Who would you remove?

Comment below so I know what you have to say!
