Up & Coming LGBT Music: Tús Nua

by Lauren Wood

Remember a while back when I reviewed this little lesbian band? (Click HERE if you don't!)

Well look here: they have some new music for you!

New song 'Matches' sounds half like something from The Hunger Games soundtrack, and half like something dreamy and otherworldly that Daughter would write.

Check it out here if you're into that sort of vibe:

About the band:

Formed in 2014, Tús Nua has existed with the current members since 2016. The band released an EP in April of 2014 and is currently recording its first LP, which should be out by the end of 2016. First single off the album, called Matches, will be released in July 2016. Tús Nua plays a blend of post-rock, shoegaze, and a little bit of everything, and is currently based in Zagreb. So far, Tús Nua has played in Belgium, Slovenia, and Croatia.

NEW Music Video from ANTIGONE RISING

ANTIGONE RISING
RELEASES BRAND NEW MUSIC VIDEO FOR “EVERYWHERE IS HOME”
FROM THE SOUNDTRACK OF THE LESBIAN MOB COMEDY ALTO

New York, NY - Antigone Rising (AR) has announced the release of the brand new music video for their song “Everywhere is Home” from the popular lesbian mob comedy feature film “Alto”.

The music video dropped March 9 on the band’s YouTube channel at: https://youtu.be/9Q6ccJvmgA0

Alto is a quirky love story set in the midst of an unanticipated run-in with the NY mafia.
It stars Diana DeGarmo, Natalie Knepp, David Valcin, Lou Martini, Jr., Melanie Minichino, and AR’s own Nini Camps.

Alto’s film producer Toni D'Antonio had produced the music video for the band’s massive hit “That Was The Whiskey”, and film director Mikki del Monico directed it.

As for the little behind-the-scenes story of the video: in the film, Diana DeGarmo sings lead with Nini Camps (who co-wrote the song with Daniel Tashian and plays best friend Kat) on background vocals.  This past month (February 2016), Antigone Rising took to the stage to sing their song, this time with Nini Camps where you can usually find her: on lead vocals. The music video uses both!

Antigone Rising continues to rise to the occasion fusing their success in the music industry with educating youth around the globe as Cultural Ambassadors to the United States Government.

The band has successfully launched their own noprofit organization, Girl Bands Rock (www.GirlBandsRock.org) - to inspire and educate kids, especially young girls, that it's ok to think outside the box and pursue careers in non-traditional fields. They have partnered with school districts and youth centers all over the country to create innovative programming dedicated to building confidence in youth by developing leadership and creative skills through musical workshops, outreach programs and performances.

For the all-female-boot-stompin'-alt-country-rock band ANTIGONE RISING, helping aspiring young artists while giving back to their community is something that comes second nature to a group that is helping to create music and history.

Best known for relentless touring and masterful musicianship, Antigone Rising played upwards of 280 shows a year in their early days. Whether it was an open mic on a Monday night or a jam packed New York City hometown show, the ladies and their infamous Vanna White (the band's beloved 15 passenger van) eventually blazed a trail straight to arenas alongside some of the biggest names in rock history including The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, The Allman Brothers Band, The Bangles and Rob Thomas.

NEW LGBTQ MUSIC REVIEW: Tús Nua

by Lauren W

It is very rare for me to write a music review here on ATL, but I just couldn't help myself.

Tús Nua are a brand new band from Zagreb, Croatia, although they sound as though they've been performing for a lifetime.

Their sound is already so mature sounding and professional that you'd never know this band was only founded in September of 2014.

This duo is formed of Jordi (guitar/bass/synth/vocals) and Marija (bass/guitar/synth/vocals). Whilst listening to their first EP, "Existence", one cannot go without comparing them to a more modern, female Placebo (a great compliment, in my eyes).

The catchy, edgy rhythm and vocals within each of their songs causes the mind to jump to television and film soundtracks. When I first listened to track #2 on the EP ("Flowing Around"), I couldn't help but think that it wouldn't go amiss as part of a soundtrack to an angsty, sexy television show, such as True Blood or even The L Word.

On their freshman EP, guest drummer Emerge Dora seems to 'get' the band's persona and the way they want to come across, providing extremely fitting beats and clashes to create a sturdy scaffold for each of the tracks.

Self-labelled as 'hard to describe' in terms of genre, the band position themselves as somewhere between alt-rock and shoegaze; or at least a mixture of both, if you will.

It should also be noted that although this twosome hail from Croatia, they sing all of their original songs in the English language. Unfortunately, some listeners are turned off when they cannot understand the lyrics to a song. Personally, I'd listen to Tús Nua even if they sang in German, Arabic, or Zulu - their music is really that good.

You can get a FREE download of Tús Nua's "Existence" EP or listen to it online (also for free!) over at http://tus-nua.bandcamp.com/. Don't miss this.

SICK OF SARAH Go On Tour!

by Lauren Wood

That's right, you heard it correctly. Queer all-female band Sick of Sarah are embarking on a full tour of the US starting today!

Sick of Sarah, alongside duo Uh Huh Her, are actually the only current lesbian band I listen to; my music taste is generally stuck in the 1970s. I don't think you need any more proof that these ladies are worth a listen!

Check out their tour dates here:

You can find more information about tickets on the band's website, http://sickofsarah.com/.

ANTIGONE RISING Announces New Album, “Whiskey & Wine, Volume 2"

“Whiskey & Wine, Volume 2" Out March 17, 2015
& New US Tour Dates

NEW YORK, NY - Antigone Rising (AR), the New York based all-female rock band, has announced the release of "Whiskey & Wine - Volume 2” in conjunction with new tour dates. Volume 2 will be available on iTunes and AR’s website on March 17th.

The fab four comprised of Nini Camps (lead singer), Dena Tauriello (drums) and founding sisters Kristen Henderson (bass/vocals) and Cathy Henderson (guitar/vocals), are showing no signs of slowing down!

Since releasing "Whiskey & Wine - Volume 1” on iTunes and the band’s official website last year, the band has not only kept busy with a non-stop touring schedule but as well with long studio hours to complete the highly anticipated Volume Two of the double EP project.
"With W&W Vol. 2 the songs have gotten much more personal, the productions a little more elaborate.  These songs all have something to say.” says Kristen  Henderson.  "It's important to the band that we write songs that say something about who we are and what we stand for. We are looking forward to touring and performing the songs for a live audience, getting the crowd's reaction and visiting cities we haven't been to in quite some time. It's going to be a great year for Antigone Rising.

The massive success of Volume One kept the band on the road for the most part of 2014 . The first single “That was the Whiskey”, co-written with Nashville songwriter Lori McKenna (Faith Hill, Little Big Town, Hunter Hayes), premiered on CMT trending in the Top 10 and was nominated in the "Country Song" Category at The 13th Annual Independent Music Awards.

Antigone Rising have toured with such A-listers as Aerosmith and The Rolling Stones; were appointed as cultural ambassadors by the United States government to tour Israel and the Middle East; and have also played a part in LGBTQ advocacy, making news when Kristin Ellis-Henderson appeared on the cover of Time Magazine with wife Sarah Kate Ellis-Henderson (president/CEO of GLAAD) for a feature on marriage equality.

The girls have consistently been turning up everywhere from the pages of Curve Magazine, Billboard, Out Magazine, Buzzfeed, AfterEllen and the Huffington Post to appearances on The Today Show and The Tonight Show, among others.

No one can deny the momentum behind Antigone Rising!

Known for their unique & electrifying live performances featuring toe-tapping beats and powerful vocals, Antigone Rising is not just good; they are insanely good and best experienced live.  And whether on stage or on an iPod, Antigone Rising continues to make a lot of noise!

LESMUSIC: NEW ANTIGONE RISING VIDEO PREMIERE

ANTIGONE RISING
 THE ALL-FEMALE-BOOT-STOMPIN'-COUNTRY-ROCK BAND
WORLD PREMIERES BRAND NEW MUSIC VIDEO

“GET TO YOU”

Antigone Rising’s brand new music video for their song “Get To You” officially hit cyberspace today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9lYqkLAkuw

The all-female-boot-stompin'-alt-country-rock band filmed the music video with directors Jie Yi and Valerie Lasser during their run of New England tour dates back in March 2014. The catchy track is taken from the band’s newly released EP “Whiskey & Wine - Volume 1", which dropped on iTunes and their official website March 25th, 2014.

The concept of the “Get To You” video is meant to invoke the sense of bonding and spiritual sisterhood that naturally forms and is collectively shared between all band members while on the road, living together in close quarters for long periods of time, be it on a tour bus or on stage.

The music video gives an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse into Antigone Rising’s tight-knit camaraderie which provides all four of them - Kristin Ellis-Henderson, Cathy Henderson, Nini Camps and Dena Tauriello - a much-welcome backbone and support for the long weeks spent away from home and from their loved ones. “Get To You” ultimately shows how on the road, Antigone Rising is a family.

Antigone Rising was the first band on Starbuck’s Hear Music (Lava Records) that exploded into the spotlight selling over 150,000 copies of their debut LP and landing in the top 20 of the “Billboard Heatseekers” chart for an entire year.

Since then Antigone Rising has gone from touring with such prestigious acts as The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, The Allman Brothers Band, The Bangles and Rob Thomas; traveling to the Middle East, spending time in Israel and the West Bank as cultural ambassadors for the United States Embassy, to making national headlines for having its co- founding member, Kristen Henderson featured on the envelope-pushing cover of Time Magazine's Equality issue.

With an enduring success that ensures constant touring, it’s hard to find a band currently busier than Antigone Rising.
In addition to extensively touring across the US, Antigone Rising is also running a packed promotional campaign for not just one but TWO brand new EPs for 2014: the already released 'Whiskey & Wine - Volume 1" and "Whiskey & Wine - Volume 2” due out October 28th.

Doing things very differently with these releases, the band plans to put a laser focus on each and every song on the 2 EPs.
The goal is to stay connected and involved with the fans who have always been the lifeblood of, and the most critical part of the band’s formula for success. Fans can expect loads of Antigone Rising content with videos, behind the scenes footage, and alternate mixes and versions.

Showing no sign of slowing down, at the root of it all, Antigone Rising is keeping their minds focused on one goal: to “Get To You”!

KRISSY KRISSY
JOINS
GIRL IN A COMA & HUNTER VALENTINE CO-HEADLINING TOUR

AS SUPPORTING ACT.

Fall Tour Dates Just Announced

Brooklyn, NY - 23-year-old out singer, songwriter, musician Krissy Krissy will be hitting the road together with all-female bands Hunter Valentine and Girl in A Coma for a Fall Tour.  A 20 plus- date adventure across the U.S. and Canada that kicks off on September 8th in Nashville, TN, and then continues throughout October.

The bands have officially announced a string of dates for the series of shows that sees Hunter Valentine and Girl in A Coma co-headlining with support from Krissy Krissy  (See tour dates below).

Praised as being a powerful vocal house, California native/Brooklyn raised, Krissy Krissy has been making tremendous strides in a very short period of time.

From garnering a quarter million views in just two days for her debut single “Dreams,”  to a top record on I Heart Radio, to an MTV Buzzworthy Feature, to a #1 spot on MTVU "Freshman Pick of The Week, Krissy Krissy continues to break new ground.

Growing up in a Pentecostal church, “the white girl who has soul” was quickly nicknamed “Frederica” for her musical influence spawning from the likes of Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, to Aretha Franklin. She was kicked out of choir and church at age 15 for kissing a girl; moved out of her family-of-8’s crowded two-bedroom apartment at 17; and was soon after discovered at a local karaoke bar in Brooklyn.

Since releasing her new EP "Above All" last Fall to great success, Krissy Krissy has been garnering impressive media coverage turning up everywhere from the pages of HIts Magazine, The Huffington Post, The Hype Magazine, MTV Buzzworthy, to URB and AOL Feature, to name a few.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Krissy Krissy is now working on her new album. She is also currently running a social media contest, giving away $1,000 to the person that posts the craziest picture of her new cut out cartoon on Instagram:  http://searchinstagram.com/mydaywithkrissykrissy#

Music's new "it" girl is definitely on the move and making a lot of noise!

Krissy Krissy is beyond excited to be embarking on this tour alongside acts of the caliber of Hunter Valentine and Girl In A Coma.

Coming straight out of starring in Season 3 of Showtime's hit reality series The Real L Word   into the release of their third studio album, titled Collide & Conquer, no one can deny the momentum behind rockers HUNTER VALENTINE

The in-your-face buzz-heavy all-girl rock band, formed by Kiyomi McCloskey (lead vocals/guitarist) and Laura Petracca (drummer), has unequivocally established itself as a veritable powerhouse that is exploding onto the mainstream. Averaging some 200+ tour dates a year all over the world including the Sum 41 tour and more recently The Cindy Lauper "She's So Unusual" tour, Hunter Valentine have never been more primed to take the musical world by storm (www.Huntervalentine.com).

If anything is big in Texas, it's certainly the buzz around San Antonio's friend/sister trio, Girl in a Coma. Discovered and signed by Joan Jett after participating in a cable TV show called 'Jammin',' the three girls took their punk tinged soulful tunes and charted iTunes and Billboard. They've opened for bands like Tegan and Sara, Social Distortion and Morrissey. With a total of four albums worth of high-end singles and retro covers, they have earned the attention of many industry veterans and celebrities alike, including James Franco, who recently directed a series of commercials for Stuart Weitzman shoes, using the girls’ sultry cover of “Walkin’ After Midnight.” (www.GirlinaComa.com).

Get ready for the all-female artists invasion! New music, new tour dates and bigger sound will be coming to a city near you this Fall.

For more information about Krissy Krissy visit: www.krissykrissy.com

TOUR DATES:

Please note that the September 8th show in Nashville is Hunter Valentine and Krissy Krissy only. Also, all shows after the Chicago date are as well only Hunter Valentine and Krissy Krissy.

More dates  to be added.

Up & Coming Lesbian Music: Jungal

JUNGAL

‘Leave My Head Album Launch Tour’

BC and Alberta - June/July/August 2013

Australian roots/rock ladies 'Jungal' return to Canadian soil to launch their latest
record 'Leave My Head' this summer across BC and Alberta. The new tracks signify
a new, more mature and darker sound for the trio, as they explore themes of emotional disorder and the ‘crazy in us all’. Certainly, since their last full length
release in 2010 Jungal have had some profoundly challenging but powerful  learning experiences about love, life, emotion and well being.  These have included
relationship breakups, aspergers syndrome, losing a friend to drugs, coming out,
and the whirlwind that was their first tour in Canada. Not to mention long distance
relationships, clinical depression, as well as the time they unknowingly hired a
tour van of a craziest man in Canada. Whilst recording in Melbourne, Australia
at ‘The Aviary’ with Fraser Montgomery co-producing, the Jungal ladies were able to
explore and express these experiences. The result, ‘Leave My Head’ the 5 from the Aussie trio.

Bringing ingredients of roots, rock, a dash of blues, and a sprinkle of soul to their
cauldron, Jungal will serve up a feast of live music to Canadians this summer  through an energetic, rocking performance. The Jungal sisterhood are renown for giving audiences their all, delivering punchy melodies, powerful grooves and  some genuine girl power. These ladies know how to prowl, and spread their foot stomping, heart pumping goodness around the globe.

During their fourth Canadian summer tour, Jungal will perform a rather long string of performances of festivals and pub shows promoting the new album. ‘Leave My Head’ will be available for Canadian Audiences from June 21. Please check out
www.jungalmusic.com for all the latest dates and info.

“Jungal doesn’t waste any time getting down to the business of rocking the house
creating a maelstrom of frenetic energy backed up by the musical chops to rock the
main stage of any festival."

(Paul Crawford, Music Director, Artswells Festival CAN)

“Their energy abounds and their grooves spun our crowd into a dancing frenzy."

(John Armstrong, Festival Director, Sasquatch Gathering CAN)
